LIST OF CALABRIAN FIGURES IDENTIFIED AS ACTIVE DURING THE MARKET MURDERS:

Domenico Italiano aka The Pope.

-Born February 3 1897, Calabria – Died December 13, 1962

-Arrived in Melbourne 1930, established locale following early efforts by Antonio Malarbi, naming Antonio Barbaro as sotto-capo

-Commission Agent, Victoria Markets

-Fathered a number of daughters who inter-married with figures including Michele Scriva

-Said to served as national boss/most senior for a period.

 

Antonio Barbara aka The Toad

-Born 1902, Plati, Reggio Calabria – Died Early 1963

-Arrived Re D’Italia, 1922. Spent some time in Adelaide before settling in Melbourne.

-Associate of early mob figure Rocco Malarbi.

-Served 5 years for the 1935 murder of Ethel Praetz, described as a procuress, receiver of stolen goods and police informer. Deemed manslaughter.

-Heavily involved in immigration rackets, nominating migrants for profit.

-Became known as Italiano’s enforcer and sotto-capo

 

Domenico DeMarte

-Born 1922, Delianova, Reggio Calabria

-Arrived in Melbourne aboard the SAN REMO, on January 17 1938, aged 17

-Record of violence even before being acquitted of the 1945 murder of Fat Joe Versace, alongside Michele Scriva and Domenico Pezzimenti.

-Commission Agent, Victoria Markets

-Boss elect after death of Italiano, recognised as a leading figure as far back as the 1957 Brunswick meeting, which he called in response to percieved insults from one of the Tripodi brothers.

-Shot November26th, 1963 by Angiletta loyalists after which he stood down.

 

Vincenzo Muratore

-Born 1921, Oppido Mamertina, Reggio Calabria – Murdered January 16 1964

-Arrived in Melbourne February 14 1938, aged 17

-Commission Agent, Victoria Markets

-Described as close to Italiano and formerly to Angiletta before siding with DeMarte faction

-Named as contabile’ or accountant, number 3 under Italiano and DeMarte

-Murdered at 2.30am outside his home in Hampton

-Son Alfonse would marry into the Benvenuto family and continue to engage in Market rackets himself.

 

Liborio Benvenuto

-Born December 5 1922, Bruzzano Zeffirio Reggio Calabria – Died June 10, 1988

-Arrived in Melbourne in 1942/43

-Commission Agent, Victoria Markets

-Became boss following DeMarte and Italiano, held from 1965 until his death.

-From ’65, considered 4th most senior Calabrian boss in Australia.

-Survived an attempted murder in May 1983 by car bomb; gelignite strapped beneath his vehicle blew the car apart. He was unharmed.

-Daughter Angela had wed Alfonso Muratore, son of Vincenzo on Feb 2 1976. He left her in 1989, a year after Liborio died.

 

Giuseppe Joe Arena aka The Friendly Godfather

-Born September 28, 1937 – Murdered August 1, 1988 @ Bona Vista Road, Bayswater

-Fined in 1951 for possessing an automatic weapon. At the time was head-waiter at popular Italian restaurant, Mario’s

-Served 2 years for manslaughter in 1977, having killed a man his wife’s secret lover

-Known as money-launderer and senior figure by time of death

-Murdered outside his home at Bona Vista Road, Bayswater only 6 weeks after Benvenuto died. Murder remains unsolved. He’d been tapped by Benvenuto to become boss, with Alfonso Muratore being deemed unready.

-Worth $950,000 at time of death

 

Michele Scriva

-Born June 19, 1919 Reggio Calabria – Died May 1989

-Commission Agent, Victoria Markets

-Charged in one of Australia’s earliest mob murders, that of Giuseppe “Fat Joe” Versace, alongside Domenico DeMarte and Domenico Pezzimenti. All were acquitted.

-Sentenced to death in 1950 for the murder of Frederick Duffy. The sentence was commuted to life and he was released in 1960, whereupon he was given a job at the Markets.

-Married one of Domenico Italiano’s daughters

-Father of Gaetano Scriva, lawyer and money-launderer who would marry a daughter of Liborio Benvenuto’s

-Pall-bearer at Italiano and Muratore funerals.

 

Rosario Gangemi aka Ross, Ross the Boss

-Born Died 2008.

-Described as up and comer, involved in decision making during the Market Murders, having attended 1963 Bonanza Bar meeting called by Muratore

-Said to have been close to Benvenuto

-High ranked nationally by 1990’s. Possibly the/one of the figures involved in threatening the Costa Group over the produce tax scam.

 

Vincenzo Nastrastisi

-Retailer, Victoria Markets

-Named by Cusack as a strong arm type affiliated with Italiano’s group

 

Francesco Madaferri

-Variously spelled as Madafferi and Maddaferi.

-Brother to Giuseppe, who had killed his wife in 1956

-Described as close to Italiano

-Unknown relationship to Madaferri brothers Antonio and Francesco, notorious in the milieau of modern day Melbourne

 

Vincenzo Angiletta

-Born 1916, Gioia Tauro, Calabria – Murdered April 4 1963

-Arrived March 7 1951, aged 35

-Grower and Merchant, Victoria Markets

-Record in Italy dating back to 1934, with charges including theft, black marketeering, carrying weapon. Named as belonging to the local mafia group with his three brothers, with his ‘ndrangheta pedigree affording him a position in Italiano’s locale upon his arrival in Australia

-Clashed with DeMarte upon Italiano’s death, allegedly starting his own splinter faction, given the name La Bastarda, the Bastard Society.

 

Nicola Correale

-Born February 11, 1935, Italy

-Arrived in Melbourne aboard the SURRIENTO, March 3 1955

-Angiletta loyalist and close friend

-Detained at the 1957 Brunswick meeting, subsequently charged with possession of a 6 inch knife. Case was amongst those dismissed

 

Pietro Medicii

-Angiletta loyalist, named in Cusack Report as a member of La Bastarda

-Possibly referring to Francesco Medici, or is otherwise an early patriarch of the notorious Medici clan of Victoria, Mildura in particular.

 

Carmelo Arfuso

-Born 1943

-Angiletta loyalist, his illegitimate son

-Angiletta was involved with his mother, Carmela Maria Arfuso, despite his marriage to another woman who lived with their 7 children close by. Cusack described Vincenzo as basically having two homes.

-Acquitted of charges relating to Muratore and DeMarte

-Charged in 1965 for the 1963 wounding of Antonio Violi, though case was dismissed

 

Francesco Angiletta

-Born Calabria, 1921

-Arrived in Melbourne 1959

-Angiletta loyalist and nephew

-Resided with Angelo DeMarte and Angelo DeMasi, reputedly living off the earnings of prostitution

-Fled Australia 4 weeks after the attack on DeMarte, was captured by Italian law enforcement and would face trial in Palmi. Authored a statement implicating his accomplices in the murder of Muratore and wounding of DeMarte

-Spent 3 years imprisoned in Palmi. Acquitted in 1967.

-Found in April of 1963 to be in possession of documents describing how to start a locale

 

Angelo Demarte

-Born 1943, no relation to Domenico DeMarte

-Resided with Francesco Angiletta and Angelo DeMasi, reputedly living off the earnings of prostitutes

-Angiletta loyalist and son in law (would marry Angiletta’s daughter)

-Identified as responsible for wounding DeMarte.

-Acquitted of charges relating to attack

 

Angelo DeMasi

-Described in the Cusack Report as a criminal associate of Francesco Angiletta

-Resided with Angiletta and DeMarte, reputedly living of an income provided by prostitution

 

Francesco Cammaroto

-Born August 24 1918, Calabria

-Arrived in Melbourne June 10 1952 aboard the SYDNEY

-Detained at 1957 Brunswick meeting at the home of his cousin, Domenico Versace. Found with a knife in his sock.

-Described by Cusack as a part of Italiano’s circle prior to the Pope’s death.

-Listed as an Angiletta loyalist and member of La Bastarda

-Commission Agent, Victoria Markets and Merchant

Gregorio Seato

-Described by Cusack as a part of Italiano’s circle prior to the Pope’s death.

-Commission Agent, Victoria Markets
